ALLSTAR SPRINTS: Sprint Speedweek Starts June 10

22 May 1998

PONCE INLET, FL - The sixth annual $120,000 Western Pa. All Star Sprint Speedweek is set to start Wednesday, June 10 through Sunday, June 14 and driver entry forms are in the mail for those who want to participate in the $5,850 point fund.

This years version of five straight nights of open wheel competition kicks off for the very first time at Mercer Raceway Park off Rt. 19 in Mercer on Wednesday June 10. Now in its second year of weekly racing after numerous attempts to bring new life to the 3/8 mile oval, Mercer is once again a hotbed of racing activity.

The Speedweek action switches to Port Royal Speedway near Mifflintown on Thurs. June 11 where the half mile lures the best of central Pa. competitors in for the big All Star show.

For the sixth straight year, Lernerville Speedway in Sarver prepares to host the series on Friday, where defending Western Pa. Speedweek Champion Keith Kauffman remains the only driver to win twice in the previous five years.

Pittsburghs Pa. Motor Speedway In Imperial ranks their Saturday night June 13 Speedweek show up as one of their biggest attractions of the season. It is the only time this season the sprint cars will be on the high banked monster half mile.

The $5,000 to win finale at Tri City Speedway, just north of Franklin, will be on Sunday, June 14. This is the first full season for Tri City to run regular sprint cars, who are set to hold their ground against the All Star invaders.

The past five versions of Western Pa. Speedweek have seen 23 features completed, with the following dozen winners: Dale Blaney (7), Ed Lynch Jr. (3), Fred Rahmer (3), Keith Kauffman (2), and single wins by Don Kreitz, Jr., Steve Smith, Bobby Allen, Jimmy Hawley, Kenny Jacobs, Tim Shaffer, Joey Saldana and Bob Felmlee. Drivers who wish to try for part of the points fund should fill out an entry form and the postmark should read no later than May 30.
