Indy 500: Arie Luyendyk Carb Day Notes

22 May 1998

Indianapolis, IN: Carburetion day and the Coors Indy Pit Stop Challenge drew a strong crowd on Thursday to the Speedway as teams began their final preparations for the great event on Sunday afternoon. All 33 cars hit the track for morning practice to dial in race setups on full tanks. The Treadway team with Arie Luyendyk at the helm conquered all of their "engine gremlins" and ran well, settling easily into the top-ten.

The Coors Indy Pit Stop Challenge was a heated battle between Team Menard, A.J. Foyt Racing, the Panther Pennzoil team and Treadway Racing. The Treadway team battled Kenny Brack in the first heat and blazed away with the fastest pit stop of the day-approximately 12 seconds. However, the semi-finals pitted them against another speedy crew and the team was beaten by a fraction of a second by the Panther Pennzoil crew. The team can rest assured however, that the 12 second stop was never beaten!

Arie Luyendyk Quote:
"As far as the race goes, I'm going to lay back in the beginning rather than attack. We'd like to go to the front, and be there and stay there. It really depends on how the race unfolds. The approach will be fairly sensible, all in all, to get to the front."
