CART: Miller Lite 200 Notebook

29 May 1998

Michael Andretti
MILWAUKEE, WI: The Milwaukee Mile qualifies as one of Michael Andretti's favorite stops on the FedEx Championship Series tour, and with good reason. Andretti, CART's all-time career victory leader with 37, has scored five of those wins at Milwaukee, in 1986, 87, 91, 92, and 96.

In 13 career starts at The Mile, he has failed to score PPG Cup points only once, when he finished 19th in 1985, and he has finished fifth or better in eight consecutive starts at Milwaukee, dating to 1989.

Another victory at Milwaukee would tie Andretti with Al Unser Jr. for most CART victories among current venues, with six. Unser Jr. own six career victories at Long Beach, in 1988, 89,'89, 90, 91, 94, and 95.

Andretti could surpass another Unser, Al Sr., if he leads 85 laps of Sunday's Miller Lite 200. After leading 133 laps of last week's Motorola 300 at Gateway International Raceway, Andretti totaled 5,728 career laps led in CART competition.

That's far and away the leading total in CART history (Rick Mears is a distant second at 3,286), but with 85 more laps led, Andretti could move into third place on the all-time Champ Car list, ahead of Al Unser Sr.(5,812).

Andretti tops this year's FedEx Championship Series in laps led (314). In 13 career starts at Milwaukee, he has led 625 laps, or 11 percent of his career total. He led 100 or more laps at Milwaukee - more than half of each 200-lap event in 1986 (110), 1990 (111), 1991 (107), and 1992 (173).
