ALLSTAR Sprints: Kenny Jacobs Wins at 34 Raceway

2 June 1998

BURLINGTON, IA - Ohios Kenny Jacobs led every lap in the All Star sprint 30-lap feature Sunday night at 34 Raceway. It was the All Stars first-ever visit to the eastern Iowa 3/8 mile high banks. With the win and the fourth place finish of Joey Saldana, Jacobs sits atop the series point standings by one marker, 1692-1691.

"I knew once I got the pole it was my race unless I screwed up," said Jacobs. "I was only afraid that someone might shoot around me when I got held up in traffic. But it was really slippery out there." It was his third All Star win of the season in the Tim Hughes, Hughes Wheel and Axle J&J.

Jacobs and most of his pursuers chose rock hard Goodyear 62 compounds. Jacobs credited crew chief Barry Jackson, Pro-shocks, Pennzoil and Kriner Chevrolet engines for the win.

Frankie Kerr started Stan Shoffs Eagle alongside Jacobs, who held the Butlerbuilt Hot Seat pole. Jeff Haines and Sarah Fisher started in the second row, with Brent Antill and Gary Wright in row three. After Jacobs grabbed the lead, action slowed with one lap in the books for a Manny Rockhold spin. Jacobs took over again when the green fell, with Kerr in pursuit and Wright moving to third. The pack continued in this fashion until lap 13, when Donnie Beechler spun, and had to be towed off.

Jacobs got another great restart at the frontstretch cone, with Wright smoking his tires to try and move past Kerr. But the defending All Star champion held off the Texas veteran. Lap 17 saw two cautions, the first for a Bart Schniederman spin, and the second for Todd Taegers flat tire. But Jacobs held command each restart, leading the rest of the way with Kerr never able to seriously challenge.

Behind the top trio of Jacobs, Kerr and Wright, in a new Maxim, Saldana slipped by Sarah Fisher at the very end of the race for a fourth place finish with the Ohio teenager fifth in her Mead Carbonless Paper Stealth.

Travis Cram took top passing honors, moving from 18th to finish sixth with Breezy Whitworth next. Antill held on for eighth and Dean Jacobs moved Denny Ashworths machine from 14th to ninth at the finish. Fifteenth starter Keith Kauffman, aboard the Warren Johnson United Expressline No. U2, was tenth.

The United Expressline heat fell to Gary Wright, the Southwest Expressline heat to Ryan Jamison and the Southwest Glass heat was won by Travis Cram. Keith Kauffman won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with Brent Antill the United Expressline B Main winner.
