SPRINT: Civil War Sprint Series Bound for Double Header This Weekend

10 June 1998

CHICO, CA - The competitors of the California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series are preparing for two big days of action this weekend. On Friday, June 12 the competitive series for 360 cubic inch powered sprint cars will take to the high banks of Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico for their fourth round of competition. This will be the first season visit to the Chico 1/4 mile, after suffering a rain-out during memorial day weekend, the third rain out of the 1998 Civil War campaign.

Following Friday night's event, Civil War competitors will make their way back to Twin Cities Speedway in Marysville for segment five of the series. This will mark the second Civil War event of the season at Marysville, who hosted the rain delayed season opener back in April.

Entering Friday nights event, Rio Linda's Roger Crockett will top the entry list. Crockett, after finishing second in round three at Placerville Speedway on May 22, now commands the Civil War point standings with a 13 point lead over fellow Rio Linda resident Mike Wasina Jr. Previous point leader Shane Scott of Chico now ranks third overall with Grass Valley's Jeff Halleib and David Robinson Jr. of Sacramento rounding out the top five competitors.

One driver that is expected to join the Civil War squad once again Friday night will be Campbell's Brent Kaeding. A committed competitor to the Northern Auto Racing Club, Kaeding has been literally, storming his way up through the Civil War point standings by competing in all but one Civil War event.

Every event Kaeding has competed in has taken place either on a Sunday or a weeknight and has been an event which has been rescheduled due to rain. The 10-time NARC champion is perhaps the only person who is actually benefiting from the unusual weather and now has a chance at landing a position in the Pacific Sprint Cup Invitational in September.

The Pacific Sprint Cup Invitational is the 10th event of the Civil War campaign. It opens the annual Gold Cup Race of Champions at Chico and is open to the top 32 point runners in the Civil War series. Currently, Kaeding ranks 12 in the point standings.

"We don't know if were going to have enough points or not," said Bill Foland, spokesman for Kaeding's M&M Racing team. "Brent would like to compete in the Chico race and we'll just have to see where we sit when that time comes. The weather has been a definite advantage for us. As for now, we've been having a lot of fun running with the Civil War series and hope to make more of the shows."

Additional drivers expected to join Kaeding Friday night include Rio Linda's Bobby McMahan, another NARC competitor who won the Civil War event at Placerville on May 22. Grass Valley's Billy Wallace is also expected along with Mark Hall, Ray Rust, Gary Geving, Jeff Young, Kyle Schild and more.

Action is scheduled to begin at 6:30 on both nights with qualifying followed by racing at approximately 7:30. Tickets will be available at the gate at both events beginning at 5 p.m. Adult tickets will be $12, juniors and seniors $7, kids will be $3 and those under six will be admitted for free.
