IRL: Pep Boys to Sponsor July 19 Race at Dover Downs

16 June 1998

DOVER, Del., June 16, 1998 - Officials of Dover Downs International Speedway and The Pep Boys - Manny, Moe & Jack - have announced that the return of Indianapolis-style racing to the "Monster Mile" on Sunday, July 19 will be known as the Pep Boys 400K.

In addition to title sponsorship of the Pep Boys 400K at Dover, Pep Boys is the series sponsor for the Pep Boys Indy Racing League. The Dover Downs race is the sixth of 11 events in the Pep Boys IRL this year. At the end of this season, Pep Boys will present the "Pep Boys Million" to the championship-winning car owner and driver. The owner and driver will split a $1 million bonus.

Eddie Cheever, winner of the 1998 Indianapolis 500, along with defending Pep Boys IRL champion Tony Stewart and two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk will lead the field to Dover. The nation's premier open-wheel, oval-track racers will appear at Dover Downs for the first time since the track's inaugural season of 1969.

"Pep Boys has become a major force in motorsports through their association with the Indy Racing League," said Denis McGlynn, president and chief executive officer of Dover Downs Entertainment, Inc. "We're pleased to have them join us as a sponsor of our inaugural IRL event, and we expect Dover Downs will become their home track given our proximity to their headquarters in Philadelphia."

Pep Boys 400K schedule: The inaugural Pep Boys 400K starts at noon July 19. Pep Boys IRL drivers will race 250 laps on the 1-mile "Monster Mile." PPG Pole qualifying starts at noon July 18. Practice sessions are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. July 17, and 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. July 18.
