WOO: Haudenschild Wins Beer Town Showdown

By Richard DayBEAVER DAM, WI) - The shoulder he injured 16 days ago is still sore and he's breaking in a new crew chief, but Jac Haudenschild hasn't slowed down on the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series tour.
In only his second race back after nursing the injury for a couple of weeks, Haudenschild won the Seventh Annual Beer Town Showdown at Beaver Dam Raceway Wednesday.
"The Pennzoil car worked well tonight," Haudenschild said. "The Maxim chassis worked really well, and it felt pretty good the whole race.
"I have to thank Jack Elden for giving me a great car and a great team. Banzai (crew chief Dean Bruns), Dave (Kinnard) and Chris (Hager) have been around the World of Outlaws for a while, so they know what to do. I think we'll get a few more (victories) before this year's over."
The $10,000 victory was Haudenschild's third in a World of Outlaws main event this season and the 24th of his career.
Haudenschild, the second-fastest qualifier in the 31-car field, finished third in both the Second Racing Champions Heat Race and the Channellock Dash. He started the "A" Feature inside the second row and passed Andy Hillenburg as polesitter Mark Kinser burst into the lead at the drop of the green flag.
Kinser, a Pennzoil World of Outlaws "A" Feature winner at Beaver Dam Raceway on May 4, 1997, opened a 15-car-length advantage within three laps and was eight car-lengths ahead of Haudenschild when he entered lapped traffic during the fifth lap.
After Donny Schatz took the #15 Blue Beacon Gambler for a spin in turn four two laps later, Haudenschild challenged Kinser for the lead. The caution flag was flying again two laps later when "B" Feature winner Johnny Herrera spun and collided with Donny Goeden in the fourth corner. Severe damage to the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim kept Herrera from restarting.
Within seconds after the green flag replaced the yellow, Haudenschild steered the #22 Pennzoil Maxim into the low groove between the first and second corners to pass Kinser for the lead.
"We were able to get a little run on Mark there on the restart," Haudenschild said of the winning pass.
Second Racing Champions Heat Race winner Steve Kinser challenged Hillenburg for third place as Haudenschild entered lapped traffic with a six car-length lead during the 14th lap.
The nose wing on Mark Kinser's #5M Wirtgen Maxim was just inches from Haudenschild's bumper during lap 16 as the leaders race in dense lapped traffic. Mark was trying to regain the lead the next time around when he jumped the cushion in turn two, allowing Haudenschild to open a 15-car-length advantage.
Hillenburg took over second place late in the 19th lap when Mark jumped the cushion in the fourth corner. Two laps later, Mark took the low line into turn three to get by Hillenburg briefly, but Andy passed him back in the fourth corner. Another low move through turn three the next time around allowed Mark to pass Hillenburg for the runner-up spot.
Haudenschild opened a comfortable advantage with seven laps remaining and took the checkered flag with almost a straightaway to spare. Mark Kinser finished second for the sixth time this season. Hillenburg staved off the challenges of Steve Kinser during the final seven laps to finish third. Completing the top 10 in the "A" Feature were Danny Lasoski, Jeff Swindell, Tyler Walker, 13th-starting Dale Blaney and First Racing Champions Heat Race winner Sammy Swindell.
Greg Hodnett received his first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season after pacing the qualifying session with a 12.992- second lap around the high-banked, 1/3-mile oval.
Stevie Smith's #19 Ingersoll-Rand car suffered a blown engine during the Third Racing Champions Heat Race. With a new engine, he finished second in the "B" Feature and 13th in the main event.
Bobby Allen made the long trip from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin, only to suffer a broken rod in hot laps. His crew couldn't fix the problem, so "Scruffy" was unable to race. WoO
