NASCAR: Daytona: Racing Into the 21st Century

23 June 1998

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A visit to the "World Center of Racing," whether for the "Great American Race," the Daytona 500, the Pepsi 400 under the lights or any other world-class event, is sure to be exciting. However, racing excitement is not the only goal of Daytona International Speedway. Through extra effort and careful planning the Speedway seeks to deliver to fans a top quality, total entertainment experience.

"Daytona International Speedway is committed to offering its fans the very best, whether it's first-class facilities or first-rate amenities," said Speedway President, John Graham.

As evidenced by continuous facility upgrades and new construction projects, Daytona is constantly looking for ways to improve. The Speedway's new state-of-the-art lighting system, the largest of its kind in the world, is just one example. The lights will debut at the inaugural nighttime running of the Pepsi 400 on July 4.

One of the Speedway's greatest, but most pleasant challenges, is expansion. As more and more people discover the allure of motorsports, the need for additional viewing areas increases. Recently, 28 luxury suites were completed high atop new grandstands that now line Daytona's 3000 ft. Superstretch.

The Superstretch is not the only area of expansion. Daytona's Winston Tower, known as "the best seat in motorsports," is doubling in size. The addition will become a part of the luxurious Daytona Club and is scheduled for completion in time for the 1999 Daytona 500.

Other Speedway initiatives aimed at maximizing entertainment value include Fan Entertainment Zones, Jumbotrons, Speedway Trams and Shuttles.

Fan Entertainment Zones will feature barbershop quartets, face painters, jugglers, magicians, balloon artists and stilt walkers. Introduced during Speedweeks 1998 at Daytona, strategically-placed Jumbotrons give race fans a prime view of all of the action around the massive 2.5-mile trioval.

Speedway Trams, designed to move guests efficiently and comfortably around the 480-acre complex, are available at four Tram Plazas positioned strategically on Speedway grounds. Shuttle Buses are also available to transport guests to and from off-site parking areas.

"Anytime we add to our facility, our goal is to enhance the overall entertainment experience," continued Graham. "Our recent additions to the Speedway continue to signal Daytona's commitment to offer the finest in facilities and events."
