ALLSTAR Sprints: KC Raceway Race Results

3 July 1998

ALMA, OH - It was all Joey Saldana in the All Star sprint 30-lap Ohio Speedweek feature Wednesday night at K-C Raceway.

"I knew you couldnt run 30 laps at the top of this track and last, so I had been running the bottom as much as I could," Saldana said of his strategy, standing beside the Steve Mox, Gaerte-Chevrolet powered Goodyear Stealth in victory lane. "Steve Mox is a heck of a car owner. Its a shame Ive only won six races so far. Kathy, Daryl and Stephen and everyone did a great job." His win, in wire-to-wire fashion, cemented his series point lead, and came over Keith Kauffman and Kenny Jacobs.

With four cars inverted for the start, round three of the 16th annual Ohio Speedweek saw Saldana on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole with Dean Jacobs alongside in Denny Ashworths patriotic Schnee, with Kauffmans Warren Johnson Racing Doemelt next and the Hughes Wheel & Axle machine of K. Jacobs gridded fourth. Saldana grabbed an immediate lead over Kauffman, with K. Jacobs third and D. Jacobs fourth. The leaders entered lapped traffic on lap six, with Saldana still leading the way.

Butch Schroeder brought action to a halt with a dozen laps in the books with a flat tire, with the order Saldana, Kauffman and K. Jacobs. Frankie Kerr, who started sixth in Stan Shoffs Eagle chassis, was now fourth, having just passed D. Jacobs. After action resumed, Saldana built a half-straightaway lead at the midway point of the fast paced contest. Mark Keegan now moved into the fray, passing D. Jacobs for fifth on lap 16 as Saldana extended his lead.

Lapped traffic was a major factor the rest of the distance, and as the leaders fought their way past slower machines, no one could catch Saldana, who easily pocketed the $4,000 paycheck over Kauffman, K. Jacobs, Kerr, Keegans Schnee and D. Jacobs. Seventh was Charlie Fisher in his 1998 model self-built machine, up from ninth starting spot, with Rodney Duncan in the Harrison Trucking mount eighth after starting tenth. Brooke Tatnell was ninth with seventh starter Kevin Huntley logging tenth in the record books in the Daugherty Racing Doemelt.

"The lapped cars ran as hard as I did," Kauffman recalled of his second place finish. "I thought they were trying to race with me."

Kenny Jacobs also reflected on lapped traffic after his third place showing. "Joey got a good start and lapped cars must have gone his way."

The United Expressline heat fell to Jimmy Stinson, the Southwest Expressline heat to Randy Kinser, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Dean Jacobs and the United Specialties heat went to Saldana. Kerr won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash, Ken Burden the KSE Racing Products C Main and Keegan was the United Expressline B Main winner.

Crash victims on the night were Jim Nier in time trials, Scott Jones flipping in the C Main and Scott Miller spinning in the B Main and collecting teenager Johnathan Stevens, who then flipped. Everyone was okay in all these incidents and Nier returned to run the A Main and finish 16th.
