IRL: Boat Heads Home, Making Good Progress in Recovery

4 July 1998

Billy Boat
INDIANAPOLIS - Pep Boys Indy Racing League driver Billy Boat headed home to Phoenix today after a four-day stay at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he underwent surgery for a broken left femur suffered during a crash in the New England 200 on June 28 at Loudon, N.H.

Doctors indicated that Boat will be completely recovered from his injuries in about eight weeks, but he may return to the driver's seat of the Conseco-A.J. Foyt Racing Dallara/Aurora/Goodyear sooner.

A.J. Foyt Racing will continue to enter the Conseco Dallara/Aurora/Goodyear in upcoming Pep Boys IRL events while Boat recovers, said team manager Tommy LaMance. The team will announce its plans next week, LaMance said.

Boat continues to make good progress in his recovery from his injuries, which included a broken pelvis. Working with a physical therapist twice a day since June 30, Boat is walking and climbing stairs with the use of crutches. He will continue physical therapy at home.

The next Pep Boys IRL event is the Pep Boys 400K, July 19 at Dover, Del. Boat is fourth in the point standings with 122.
