IHRA: Scotty Cannon Sets Pro Modified History with 6.39 Pass

5 July 1998

CORDOVA, ILL.: Scotty Cannon was the first into the 6.50s. Three years later, he dipped into the 6.40s. Tonight, he set the Pro Modified world on its ears. During the Champion Spark Plugs Night Of Fire at the IHRA Summer Nationals, the Five-time IHRA Pro Modified world champion ran a 6.39. It was literally a shot that is destined to be heard around the world.

"That one was for my fans," shouted Cannon. "This season has been a dream come true for us. I can only hope that we do as well on Sunday when it really counts. I could sit around and wonder if the rules are going to be changed or whatever because I did this, but the reason we are all out here is to race and do our best. If I cant get out there and race and give it my best effort, whats the use in racing?"

Cannon led qualifying from the start of the event by recording a 6.54 in the first session and then clicking off a 6.468 during the heat of the day.
