WOO: Haudenschild Sweeps Iowa Ethanol Classic

KNOXVILLE, IA - Jac Haudenschild's Independence Day celebration didn't include fireworks. Haudenschild did his celebrating in victory lane at Knoxville Raceway Saturday after sweeping the Third Annual Iowa Ethanol Classic.

"The Pennzoil Maxim car has been running good," Haudenschild said following his fourth straight victory at Knoxville. "My crew has worked really hard the last 10 races. The guys have given me a car that feels really comfortable and is easy to drive. I want to thank Jack Elden for giving me this equipment. Hopefully, we'll be able to keep this up for him."

Haudenschild, who also swept the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' double-feature event at Knoxville Raceway in late April and early May, started outside the front row for the second straight night. Johnny Herrera earned the pole position by beating him across the finish line in the Channellock Dash.

Herrera drove the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event. While Sammy Swindell challenged Haudenschild for second, Stevie Smith steered his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into the high groove in the first corner to pass Steve Kinser for fourth place.

Haudenschild drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim deep in turn one to pass Herrera for the lead early in the fourth lap. Swindell took the low line into turn four and won a front-straightaway drag race with Herrera to take over second place three laps later.

While Smith passed Herrera for third place with a high move in the fourth corner, Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into the pit area with a power steering failure late in the eighth lap.

Haudenschild was 1.3 seconds ahead of Swindell when he entered lapped traffic during lap nine. Sammy caught Haudenschild early in the 11th lap, but was unable to surge ahead.

Terry McCarl brought out the caution flag with a second- corner spin early in lap 12. Haudenschild controlled the restart, but Swindell caught him within five laps. Sammy steered his #1 Channellock Stealth to the lowest point between the first and second corners to take the lead with 4 1/2 laps remaining.

Haudenschild pressured the defending World of Outlaws champion before taking the low line out of turn four and passing Swindell on the front straightaway late in the 23rd lap.

Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Danny Lasoski passed Swindell, then Smith maneuvered his way past both with a high move into the second corner to claim the runner-up spot early in the final lap. Stevie was four car-lengths behind when Haudenschild took the checkered flag.

"I didn't really see Sammy," Haudenschild admitted, "and I was surprised when he got by us. We just followed him around until we got a chance to get back by."

Swindell finished in third place, ahead of Lasoski, Herrera, Dale Blaney, Steve Kinser, Scott Whitworth, Donny Schatz and 20th-starting Andy Hillenburg.

Kinser's sixth-place run, coupled with Mark's 24th-place finish, allowed Steve to narrow the gap to nine points in their battle for the lead in the World of Outlaws points race.

Haudenschild's fifth "A" Feature victory of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 20th Anniversary Season pushed him past Greg Hodnett into 12th place in the standings. Finishing six positions ahead of Tyler Walker allowed Blaney to regain first place in the Manufacturers' Rookie of the Year point standings.

In the Iowa Ethanol Classic's traditional inverted feature race, Steve Kinser started outside the eighth row and took the lead during a ninth-lap restart en route to a $10,000 victory.

"I was pretty good on both the top and the bottom," Kinser explained. "When everybody went to the bottom on that (ninth- lap) restart, we were able to get around on the top.

"My crew has been working really hard, and they did what needed to be done. It's helped us learn a little something for the (Amoco Knoxville) Nationals. Besides my regular crew members Scott Gerken and Jimmy McBee, Guy Forbrook helped us tonight."

Following Tuesday's $40,000 race at Huset's Speedway in Sioux Falls, SD, the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will sanction the Inaugural Duel in the Dakotas triple-feature event at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, ND. Friday's race will be televised live on TNN: The Nashville Network, starting at 8 p.m. eastern time.
