Sprints: Rice Pops to Top of Sprint Car Points

16 July 1998

BLOOMINGTON, IN - With his first sprint car feature race win at Bloomington Speedway last Friday night, Robbie Rice climbed to the top of the Pennzoil Cup point standings. Edging Kevin Thomas and Dave Peperak in a memorable three car scrap, Rice advanced from third to the top of the standings, while Eric Burns dropped to second. After leaving his ride with Mills Motorsports last week, Burns finished 13th in his own car. Pennzoil Cup rookie Derek Scheffel is tied with Burns for second on the strength of a fifth place main event result. Thomas and Peperak also advanced into the top ten, and are tied for seventh.

Bloomington's sprint car point standings will see another shakeup as the Pennzoil World Of Outlaws compete at Bloomington Speedway tonight and those points will count toward the Pennzoil Cup season title. This will boost several of the winged-sprint car specialists back into the points.

Cory Brown, of Bedford, continues to lead the WalMart Tire & Lube Express Street Stock Division with a sixth place finish on Friday. Main event winner Greg O'Neill jumped into the top ten with his victory, checking in at ninth. Continuing to fight motor problems, early division leader Gerald Todd fell to fifth.

Matt Tiller won a race Friday night, unfortunately it wasn't the right one. After mechanical problems with his point-leading open wheel modified, Tiller jumped into Tyler Waltz' sprinter and won the Sprint Car Owners and Mechanics Race. Unfortunately, it didn't pay any points and Tiller dropped to fourth behind Albert Webb, Ray Humphrey and John DeMoss in Bloomington's open wheel modified division. Brian Campbell continues in fifth.
