All Star Sprint Race Results - Attica Raceway Park (OH)

18 July 1998

By Scott Hall

ATTICA, OH - Jeff Shepard pulled out an amazing win, getting past Kenny Jacobs in lapped traffic with a lap to go to win the All Star sprint 40-lap feature Thursday night at hot and humid Attica Raceway Park. It was Brad Doty night, and the feature paid $5,000 to win for the 200th event presented in Atticas 11 year history and it was Shepards fifth series win of 1998.

"I got under (Chad) Kemenah after I went off the racetrack and he started racing with me and we rubbed tires, I could smell tires burning and I got out of the groove and Kenny got by me and I was mad," Shepard recalled. "I raced too stinking hard that whole race to lose it and when I saw him right in front of me I stuck that baby down in there going into turn three and made it stick and we won the race. If Id just learn how to drive lapped traffic a little better it wouldnt have been so close." Shepards ride was the Goodyear shod Les and Lynda Steward Maxim with Kriner-Chevy power. In addition to the $5,000 paycheck, Shepard picked up a right rear Goodyear tire from Kears Speed Shop.

Jacobs had to settle for second again at Attica. "Jeff got in trouble with lapped cars or I would have never got around him in the first place," Jacobs said. "He just dove her in there and pushed me out of the way and did what he had to do to win. He did a great job. We had a good race car tonight, I just didnt win the race."

With eight cars inverted for the start, Frankie Kerr was on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole inside Todd Kane in his own Maxim. Kane grabbed the lead in the high groove with Keith Kauffman moving from fourth to second and sixth starter Shepard third. Shepard got Kauffmans United Expressline Doemelt for second on lap two and began trying to challenge Kane in the low groove as Kane continued to ride the rim. Shepard took over the lead on lap six with a low pass exiting turn two, then a caution came out for John Ivys stalled mount. After another lap was in, Greg Wilson spun the Bob Hampshire machine off the backstretch for another yellow.

The order was now Shepard, Kane, Kauffman, Butch Schroeder and Tim Shaffer. Shepard pulled away strong on the restart as Jacobs got past Shaffer for fifth. Kauffman used a high move to pass Kane for second on lap nine, and the order was still Shepard, Kauffman, Kane, Schroeder and Jacobs when Chad Kemenah spun for another yellow on lap 14. Then, on lap 15, the red flew when Shaffer and Dean Jacobs were battling for seventh and Shaffer lost a front wheel, with D. Jacobs riding over it, flying high into the air and flipping at full speed. After the hard flip, Jacobs was okay, with Mark Keegan also eliminated in the incident with front end damage.

Following the red the order was Shepard, Kauffman, Schroeder, Kane and K. Jacobs. Shepard pulled out to a big lead as the laps wound down, with Jacobs picking off cars and snaring third from Schroeder on lap 20. He got past Kauffman with a low move in turn four on lap 23 for second, but Shepard had a full straightaway lead at this point. On lap 29, Schroeder regained third from Kauffman, with Saldana on the move in fifth. On lap 31, Shepard went too high and ran off the backstretch, losing his big lead as he reentered the track just ahead of Jacobs. They were nose to tail for the final few circuits. On lap 36, Shepard banged wheels with Kemenah, allowing Jacobs to shoot underneath and into the lead. Shepard kept close to the leader, and saw his opportunity to dive under Jacobs and into the lead as they came down for the white flag, with Shepard leading the final lap to win by half a car length. Saldana was on the move and passed Schroeder for third right at the end, with 11th starting Kelly Kinser snaring fifth. Kauffman held on for sixth, with Kane seventh, Kerr fading to eighth, Kevin Huntley moving from 15th to ninth and John Ivy tenth.

The United Expressline heat fell to Danny Smith, the Southwest Expressline heat to Saldana, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Kevin Huntley and the United Specialties heat went to Wilson. Shepard won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with Chad Kemenah the United Expressline B Main winner. Kemenahs first career All Star fast time was worth $200 from Ramsey Trucking and a right rear Weld Racing wheel. Brad Doty received the National Sprint Car Poll Outstanding Contribution award and Media Person of the Year award in a pre-race ceremony.

Art Ball won his seventh limited late model main, over John Mayes, Mike Marteney, Mike Sudeth and Mark Steinmetz in the 15 lap contest. Kears Speed Shop sponsored the evening.
