Midgets: Grundy County Race Results, July 18

19 July 1998

The Tenth 1998 Sportsman Midget Racing event was held at the hometrack of Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Illinois. There was 46 cars in all, with the Sportsman making up 22 of those. All 22 Sportsman qualified with Quinn McCabe in the #91 Quad4 taking fast time with a screaming (16.340). Scotty Shilkuski #75, Sean Murphy #5, Mike Ohlendorf #2, Susan Spencer #24 and Roger Bettenhausen #58 rounded out the top six qualifiers.

The field was divided in half and the heats lined up. The fast heat lined up with the top eleven qualifiers bunched together for the Green Flag. The race was run Green Flag to Checker without flaw. First Heat Results were: 1.#58 R.Bettenhausen; 2.#24 Spencer; 3.#5 Murphy; 4.#14 Fifield; 5.#75 S.Shilkuski; 6.#91 McCabe; 7.#10 Billhorn; 8.#37 JonAnderson; 9.#21 Schreffler; 10.#2 M.Ohlendorf.

The Second Heat qualifiers lined up for their turn at the track. At the drop of the Green Flag, the cars took off soaring down the back stretch with the #36 car of Jimmy Anderson about mid field approaching turn three. Anderson's motor blew going into three, and the #38 Guess, #77 Kenning and the #94 Deheve were gathered up in the oil from Anderson's car. The Red Flag fell, and the mess in turns three and four was cleaned up. The remaining eight cars took the Green Flag.

Second Heat Results were: 1.#87 Rawlings; 2.#4a Aimaro; 3.#20 Smrekar; 4.#99 R.Peceniak; 5.#1 D.Ohlendorf; 6.#44 Guimond; 7.#94 Deheve; 8.#8 Hines; 9.#77 Kenning; 10.#38 Guess; 11.#36 JimmyAnderson.

When it was time for the Sportsman Feature, with the wounded on trailers, 18 of the Sportsman Midgets were ready for the Green Flag. The line up alone was enough to make for one great, competitive race. Mick Billhorn in his #10 car sat on the pole position with Quinn McCabe #91 on his outside. The Green Flag fell and the field soared around the track. There were battles all through the line up. Once again, this week, the Sportsman ran a clean race, from Green to Checkered Flags.
