Sprints: Burns Retakes Bloomington Speedway Point Lead

BLOOMINGTON, IN - When Brazil, Indiana's Eric Burns learned that he could pick up valuable points in Bloomington Speedway's Pennzoil Cup sprint car championship by competing last Wednesday, he borrowed a wing and towed into town. Although he didn't anticipate being much of a force against the Pennzoil World of Outlaws with his tired sprinter, when the Outlaw clash was rained out for the second time, he gained enough participation points to retake the lead. Burns moved 20 points ahead of Robbie Rice, who bypassed the Outlaw race.In the open wheel modified division, most of the top ten were on hand for Wednesday's competition, so there was little change in the rankings. Albert Webb continues to maintain the point lead, with Bloomington's Ray Humphrey and John DeMoss eight, and nine, points back. Matt Tiller and Brian Tyler are fourth and fifth.
This Friday, Bloomington Speedway will feature the USAC Stoops Freightliner sprint cars in the 11th Annual Pennzoil Indiana Sprint Week. Bloomington is the fifth stop as the USAC sprinters compete seven times, from Lawrenceburg to Putnamville, between July 18 and 26. The early series leader is Dave Darland, who won at Lawrenceburg last Saturday, and finished second at Kokomo on Sunday night. Tony Elliott is second in points, followed by Tolleson, Arizona's Jeremy Sherman, Kevin Thomas and Brian Hayden. Pennzoil Indiana Sprint Week features more than $152,000 in prize money and contingency awards. While each race winner earns $4,000, the series champion will make an additional $4,000. The open wheel modified division will also be in competition, and the feature winner will make $500.
Bloomington Speedway's pit gate opens at 4:30, and the grandstand gates at 5:30 pm. Hot laps begin at 6:00, with racing at 7:45. General admission is just $20, with all fans ages 12 and under admitted FREE when accompanied by an adult. Pit admission is $25.
