WOO: Along the World of Outlaws' Trail

23 July 1998

By Richard Day

Mark Kinser was obviously down on his performance during Kings Royal weekend at Eldora Speedway. That didn't keep him from raising the spirits of others, however.

When the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series visited Eldora in April, Mark promised Frankie Kerr's son, Frankie, Jr., a dollar for every "A" he made on his report card.

"The kid's pretty smart," Mark said. "He had 92 A's on his report card this year. He came running at me today, report card in hand. He didn't pull any punches, so I gave him the $92. He got every dollar he earned and he earned every dollar of it."

No matter where the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 1996 champion finishes in this year's standings, it won't diminish his humanitarian deeds ...

Paul McMahan returned to the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series in Gary Stanton's #75 Mopar Maxim Saturday at the Kings Royal. Although the car had a new, redesigned engine, its ignition problems put the team behind. McMahan, only the 48th-fastest qualifier in the 60-car field, finished sixth in the Sixth Racing Champions Heat Race and 11th in the "B" Feature ...

Steve Smith, who usually runs his own equipment in the #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit, had a Wesmar engine under the hood at Eldora. "We got behind on our own engines," Smith said. Stevie's father-in-law, Joe Blevins, lent him his Wesmar power plants ...

The 15th Annual Kings Royal took on a new format, with the six Racing Champions Heat Race winners being followed in the Channellock Dash lineup by the two fastest qualifiers who didn't win a heat race. Sammy Swindell raced into second place from outside the third row in the five-lap race ...

The 28th-lap caution that turned into a red period allowed the teams to do more than add fuel Saturday. The Pennzoil team replaced a loose header bolt on Jac Haudenschild's winning car. Kenny Woodruff switched to a taller gear in the #93 Amoco J&J and Greg Hodnett's crew changed the right rear tire on the #11H Vivarin Eagle ...

Despite losing his brakes early, Dean Jacobs won Friday's Third Racing Champions Heat Race ...

Donny Schatz and Johnny Herrera had Jet Hot on-board cameras on their cars during Friday's Eldora Clash. Herrera and Joe Gaerte gave TNN: The Nashville Network interesting views of the racing from their sprinters Saturday during the Kings Royal.
