Trucks: Rain Postpones Anderson Truck Race

10 August 1998

ANDERSON, S.C. - The competitors were ready, the fans were ready, but Mother Nature didn't cooperate for the Mama Mary's Gourmet Pizza Crust 100 scheduled Aug. 7 at Anderson Motor Speedway for the PARTS Pro Truck Series.

"It's a shame," said Larry Evans, president of the PARTS Pro Truck Series. "The fans at Anderson are as dedicated as I have ever seen. They sat there in the stands in the rain until the announcement had to made. They were there to see some racing."

The rains kept coming and a forecast for continued rain caused officials to postpone the event. The make-up date for the event is expected to be announced Monday, Aug. 10.

Before the rains curtailed the racing activity at the 3/8-mile oval, Butch Gafnea was able to claim the Re/Max Pole award with a time of 16.73 secs. Jimmy Traywick claimed the outside front row spot with Mike Davidson and point leader, Kevin Barrett making up the second row.

The 30-truck starting field remains unfilled, as the final four transfer spots from the 25-lap Division 2 race were not determined before the rains came. Greg Ausburn and J.C. Beattie are on the front row for the start of that race.

"This is the first postponement for the series and it makes it tough on everyone," said Evans. "Everyone is disappointed, but we were really impressed with the fans. Some had umbrellas, but some of them were just sitting there in the rain, waiting patiently for it to subside. We will make sure they get the show they deserve when we return.

A total of 45 trucks showed up to make the 30-truck field. When the PARTS Pro Truck Series returns to Anderson Motor Speedway, 22 trucks are scheduled to take the green flag in the 25-lap Division 2 event. The top four finishers will round out the 30-truck starting field.

The four provisional positions for the Mama Mary's Gourmet Pizza Crust 100 were awarded to Clay Young, David Elliott and Randy Gilbert based on points and a track provisional was given to Mickey Kempgens. Those four drivers will start at the rear of the field.
