Drag Bikes: John Myers Dies in Bike Accident

10 August 1998

Tuscalousa, Ala. 8/9/98 -- The motorcycle drag racing community lost one of it's greatest members this afternoon. John Myers died today from injuries suffered from a non-racing related motorcycle accident.

While crusing down a back woods highway with friend and fellow racer Steve Johnson, a road that they had both been down many times before, a small animal ran out in front of Myers as he entered a turn. To avoid striking the animal, Myers swerved and lost control of his bike - striking the guardrail.

At first glance, his injuries appeared to be simply a fractured arm. First thoughts had him returning home within a few hours. However, during examination and treatment, his life ended due to massive internal bleeding.

Myers is no stranger to the dragbike community. He rode many years for George and Jackie Bryce's Star Racing super team, and in his ten year career he recorded thirty three NHRA national event wins. He also claimed six national championships (three in NHRA, three in Prostar).

In NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle was the second winningest rider ever. He was also the first Pro Stock Bike rider ever to run quicker than 7.50-seconds.

All of his professional accomplishments aside, he was a great guy and all of those who were lucky enough to know him loved him dearly. John leaves behind his wife Kerry, and two year old daughter Christina.

Further information, including funeral arrangements, will be posted on www.dragbike.com when made available.
