TQ Midgets: Big Brothers, Big Sisters Night at Bloomington Speedway

14 August 1998

BLOOMINGTON, IN - The first appearance of the United Midget Racing Association (UMRA) TQ midgets at Bloomington will be part of Big Brothers and Big Sisters Night, on Friday, August 14. The racing program also includes the Indiana Dwarf Cars and a 150 lap Enduro.

The UMRA is the busiest three-quarter midget organization in the country and this year's racing is no exception. Five-time UMRA champion, Terry Goff is again pacing the competition, but he has plenty of opposition. The current UMRA point battle shows the Goff brothers, Terry and Carey of Fortville ahead of Chris Coers, Austin King, Ron Combs, Jerry Frickman, Mike Smith, Robert Nichols, Jr., Jim Weir and Collin Ambrose. Although Tony Stewart may be the best known of UMRA graduates, Derek Scheffel and Jason Knoke have jumped from the TQ 's to fine performances in Bloomington's Pennzoil Cup sprint cars this season. Friday's program will feature a 25-lap TQ midget main event.

Sharing the racing spotlight will be the Indiana Dwarf cars with a 20-lap feature. The program will be capped by Bloomington's Enduro 150. About a zillion specially prepared Enduro cars will line up four abreast on the red clay and run 150 laps or 1 1/2 hours. Enduro racing is great fun, there are no cautions or red flags unless there is a safety hazard. The winner will pocket $1,000 - so it will get serious. Pretty much anything can happen, and usually does.

Bloomington Speedway is particularly proud to be able to host Bloomington's Big Brothers Big Sisters for a special evening. Big Brothers Big Sisters is in the middle of their annual fund-raising activity and are selling raffle tickets for an awesome 1999 GMC Yukon Denali, with $5,000 in the glovebox and a year of free gas (or $45,000 in cash). As part of tonight's special event, BBBS will be drawing from entries for a early-bird $1,000 winner.

Family priced general admission is just $10, with fans 12 years old and under admitted free with an adult. Grandstand gates open at 5:30, with action picking up at 6:30 and racing at 7:45. The pit gate opens at 4:30, with pit admission $20.
