IRL: Brack Looks to Lone Star 500 for IRL Title Run

2 September 1998

FORT WORTH-DALLAS - Kenny Brack is on a roll in the Pep Boys Indy Racing League. Three straight victories have placed Brack on top of the IRL point standings. Another win in the Sept. 20 Lone Star 500 at Texas Motor Speedway would put Brack into the record books and some big money as well.

The 1998 Pep Boys IRL championship team will split a $1,000,000 top prize between the driver and car owner. A checkered flag at the Lone Star 500 would put Brack in full control of his destiny entering the season?s October final.

As the winner of the Lone Star 500, Brack would take home approximately $100,000 and the win would place him in contention for the Texas Two-Step Championship, a combination of IRL points earned in June?s True Value 500 and the Lone Star 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. The Texas Two-Step king will cart off $100,000 in greenbacks for the effort, the runner-up will earn a $50,000 bonus.

But the "Speeding Swede" isn?t the only driver looking to the Lone Star 500 for financial gain. Davey Hamilton parlayed a runner-up finish to Brack last Saturday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway into a runner-up position in the point standings, 23 markers behind Brack. The Lone Star 500 winner will receive at least 50 points.

One of the largest Pep Boys Indy Racing League fields since the Indianapolis 500 is expected for the Lone Star 500. Qualifying for the Lone Star 500 will begin Sept. 18 at 4:00 p.m. on The Dallas Morning News Pole Day. The Lone Star 500 green flag will drop at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. Tickets are available at the Texas Motor Speedway ticket office or at TicketMaster locations.
