ALLSTAR: Lernerville Results 9/4

6 September 1998

SARVER, PA - Dean Jacobs recorded a dominating victory over his brother Kenny in the All Star sprint 35-lap feature Friday night at Lernerville Speedway. The 12th annual Earl and Dave Bauman Memorial race, sponsored by Commercial Truck & Trailer, paid $5,000 to win to Jacobs for his fifth All Star win of the season.

"It doesnt get any better that this for the Jacobs guys," Dean related afterward, standing beside his Jr. Holbrook-owned Eagle with Gaerte-Chevrolet power and using Goodyear tires. "We come here to Lernerville Speedway every time knowing were going to have an awesome racetrack and it was no different tonight. Its only my second weekend running for Junior, he gave me a real nice racecar and well finish out the year for him."

"The last couple laps I really had my hands full, we were starting to run out of fuel, the motor started stumbling getting into the corners and we were lucky the checkered flag came when it did," He added.

"I couldnt get through three and four as good as he could," Kenny recalled of second. "I was better in one and two. He ran a good race and didnt make any mistakes. He deserved to win, he ran a good race."

"My wing sideboard broke," Jeff Shepard said after his third place run. "From the second half of the race on I was no good. I was lucky to get third."

With four cars inverted, Brian Paulus started on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole position with Greg Hodnett outside him. Hodnett moved to an immediate lead running the outside groove with Paulus in second and third starting Dean third. A Brian Ellenberger spin in front of Hodnett brought out the first caution on lap four, erasing Hodnetts large margin. He pulled away again as Dean began challenging Paulus for second. In traffic on lap nine, D. Jacobs dove low under Paulus to take over the runner-up spot. Hodnett began to lose his advantage as he had to pick his way through heavy lapped traffic, allowing Dean to close in. But by lap 15, the leaders emerged from lapped traffic and Hodnett again stretched his advantage over Dean. It was a two car race, with seventh starting Kenny third, Paulus fourth and Shepard fifth, despite a loose wing sideboard.

On lap 23, Dean dove under Hodnett to take the lead just as Hodnetts Apple Motorsports machine broke and slowed on the speedway, bringing out another caution.

"I have no Idea what happened," Hodnett said. "The motor just shut off." Hodnett tried to restart, but had to be pushed pitside when his machine would not re-fire.

Dean held the lead for the restart over Kenny, Shepard, Paulus and Joey Saldana. He pulled away from his brother, running the high groove of the ultra fast half-mile. Meanwhile, Saldana and 15th starter Jimmy Hawley were putting on a fierce battle for fourth, actually colliding on lap 30 on the frontstretch, but both kept their machines straight and didnt lose any positions. As the laps wound down, Dean headed into lapped traffic, allowing Kenny to catch up, but he never got close enough to make a pass for the lead as Dean emerged from traffic on the last lap to win by half a straight for the third 1-2 finish for the Jacobs brothers this season and the second career All Star win for the Holbrook Motorsports team.

Saldana ended up fourth, with Lernerville track champ Hawley fifth, 17th starting Kevin Huntley sixth, 20th starter Keith Kauffman seventh and Frankie Kerr recovering from a lap 27 spin for eighth. Ninth, a lap down was Bob Felmlee, followed by a fading Paulus.

The United Expressline heat fell to Keith Kauffman, the Southwest Expressline heat to Kevin Huntley, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Hodnett and the United Specialties heat went to Brian Gobrecht. K. Jacobs won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with D. Jacobs the United Expressline B Main winner. Hodnett earned a $500 bonus from Jack Lewis for leading lap 18, in memory of the late Spanky Lewis. Both Judi Bates and Sarah Fisher retired after hot laps with blown engines.

Bobby Whitling expunged the competition in the 20 lap Dingbats Restaurant pure stock main. While Whitling charted his course from his seventh place start, Tom Truxell led the first two laps. Butch Lambert was in charge laps 4-7. Whitling took control on lap eight and despite several cautions, remained supreme, capturing his career first at the Speedway. Scott Bochek was second, with Dave Harbaugh third, Truxell fourth and Dan Pflueger fifth. Randy Caldwell was sixth, followed by Chris Schneider, Dave Greenawald, Bill Agnone, Jr. and Bruce Milbert. Heats to Harbaugh, Butch Lambert and Whitling.
