ALLSTAR Sprints: Lawrenceburg Race Results

21 September 1998

LAWRENCEBURG, IN - Kenny Jacobs put on a late race slide job on leader Kevin Huntley and went on to victory in the 16th annual All Star sprint 50-lap Valvoline Hoosier Fall Classic feature Saturday night at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Jacobs earned $10,000 for his tenth All Star win of the season, which came over Joey Saldana and Huntley. "I just told my crew under the red that Id run under him (Huntley) and run up in front of him. We were just going to have to slide by him on the start. And thats what we did," Jacobs recalled. "We re-cut our Goodyear tires under the red to get them to come back and they took off again." Jacobs drives the Hughes Wheel and Axle J&J, with Kriner-Chevrolet power, with car prep by Barry Jackson, Todd Palmer and Anthony Geddes.

With four cars inverted, Jacobs started on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole position with Keith Kauffman outside. Kauffman dove low on the start and hugged the inside groove to lead. Jacobs followed in second with third starter Huntley third. By lap five, Kauffman was into lapped traffic, and Huntley put heavy pressure on Jacobs for second. With a dozen laps in the book, Kauffman lead over Jacobs, Huntley, Saldana and Kelly Kinser. The next four laps saw Huntley apply heavy pressure on Jacobs, with Huntley low and Jacobs high. Finally, on lap 17, Huntley dove under Jacobs for the runner-up spot. Kinser was side-by-side with Saldana, and he took fourth on lap 20, and snared third from Jacobs on lap 22.

Kinser ran up on a lapped car too fast on lap 29 and spun out of third place, bringing out the first caution with Kauffman still leading Huntley. Huntley was now trying to use the lowest groove of the track to nose under the low running Kauffman. After two laps of pressure, Huntley moved under in turn one to take the lead on lap 32 just before a Steve Suever spin. Kauffman now was second with Saldana and Jacobs dueling for third, then Jacobs took second with Saldana going high to snare third from Kauffman.

Huntley ran low and Jacobs high following the restart, and Saldana was third when Terry McCarl stopped off turn four for a caution on lap 38. This turned into a red flag fuel stop. On the restart, Jacobs dove low with a classic slide job to drift up in front of Huntley in turn two to take the lead, with Saldana putting the same move on Huntley on lap 42 to take second, with the pair making brief contact following the slide job. Jacobs entered lapped traffic again on lap 47, but Saldana, despite a high groove charge, was not able to mount a challenge and finished four lengths back at the end of the 12 mile run. Saldana took home the $4,000 for second with Huntley third, and Kauffman hanging on for fourth. Dean Jacobs started seventh and ended up fifth, with 12th starting Danny Smith sixth in his own No. 4, Jeff Shepard next in his Maxim and Kinser recovering from his spin for eighth. Frankie Kerr started 13th and ran ninth with Randy Kinser tenth.

"I saw Kenny get in there on Kevin so I figured if Im going to win this thing Id better try it," Saldana stated afterward. "I showed Kenny the top about half-way through and I shouldnt of done it. He went there and won the race."

Huntley was very disappointed. "My tire sealed over and the car got loose, we didnt cut it enough on the red," the third place finisher recalled.

The United Expressline heat fell to Rodney Duncan, the Southwest Expressline heat to Don Droud, Jr., the Southwest Glass heat was won by Charlie Fisher and the United Specialties heat went to Kelly Kinser. Joey Saldana won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with Todd Kelley the United Expressline B Main winner. Kerry Norris won the modified feature.
