GROVE, ENGLAND: It is finally official. Alex Zanardi, the two time and defending Championship Auto Racing Teams champion is returning to Formula one.

The FedEx Championship driver has decided to leave Target/Chip Ganassi racing at the end of the 1998 racing season. He will be joining the Williams Formula One racing team. Ralf Schumacher will also be part of the Williams team.

The current Williams drivers, Jacques Villeneuve and Hienz-Harald Frentzen will be leaving the team. Villeneuve is headed for a new Formula One team, while Frentzen will be driving for Jordan.

Zanardi said of the move, "I had opportunities to leave the team earlier on, but I never considered them because I felt staying with Chip was the best opportunity for me at the time. I feel that I have gotten the most out of my three years and now it's time to turn a page in my career."

Zanardi raced for Target/Ganassi racing three years. He astounded racing fans in his rookie year with several wins. Zanardi has won the CART FedEx championship the past two seasons.

It could not be confirmed, but sources say Zanardi will receive $6.7 million for a three year contract with Williams.
