NASCAR Trucks: Confidence High for Scot Walters

14 October 1998

* Confidence is High For Final Short Track of 98: Scot Walters and the Red Man/Brewco Motorsports team feel they have a secret weapon this week. Mike Steurer, crew chief on the No. 37 Red Man truck brings a plethora of racing success at Mesa Marin Speedway to the table.

To say he knows how to set up a vehicle to get around the tight little California bullring is an under statement. He was crew chief for Lance Hooper during their victory in the NASCAR Southwest Tour race held here in 1995. The two of them returned in 1996 in the NASCAR Winston West Series and the result was the same, a victory.

In 1997 and 1998 Steurer moved over to crew chief Gary Smith in the No 16 NAPA NASCAR Winston West Series car, and the results were again outstanding. The No. 16 car finished 2nd three times at Mesa Marin with Steurer turning the wrenches.

"I have high expectations," said Steurer. "Scot has a back ground on the shorter race tracks so he should adapt to Mesa Marin fairly quickly. I've been racing their since the track opened, and I've had cars that have won there in the Southwest Tour and Winston West Series. So I think we if can get the truck set up for Scot we should be as fast as any body there."

* Average Finish: Scot Walters and the Red Man/Brewco Motorsports team continue to show improvement in the second half of the 1998 season. Their 16th place finish in the Kragen/Exide 151 at Sears Point Raceway was the 7th top 20 finish in 10 races. It also lowered the team's average finish to a 17.1, in the second half of the year. This is compared to an average finish of 20.4 in the first half of the season.

* Associate Sponsor: Ultra Mar/Beacon Oil store is the associate sponsor on the No. 37 Red Man Chevrolet for the California Truck Stop 300 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Mesa Marin Speedway in Mesa Marin, California. The chain operates 132 stores in California.
