DRIVER QUOTE:
Jeff Gordon, 1998 Winston Cup Champion, #24
"We did the tire test and the tire wear was very good. It was a great
test. I am really looking forward to going back to Atlanta to try the
right and left side tire combination that was chosen from the
test."
NOTES AND QUOTES:
"We are bringing a new Goodyear Eagle recommendation which features a new
right side tread compound as well as a new right and left side
construction, which will improve the ride and feel of the race car," said
Tony Freund, Goodyears lead engineer for stock car tire development. This
tire setup is similar to what is used on other high-banked speedways,
however it remains unique to Atlanta. "We plan to research its
applicability and slight variations at Texas Motor Speedway in December,"
added Freund.
"For the Atlanta tire test in late September, we returned to a multiple
car testing procedure that was used years ago," explained Phil Holmer,
Goodyears marketing manager for stock car tires. "In order to simulate
conditions most comparable to a race and to represent all three car
manufacturers Chevy, Ford, Pontiac we invited the top two drivers in the
points standings, Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin, as well as the winner of
the last two Winston Cup races at Atlantas reconfigured track, Bobby
Labonte."
The numerous laps logged by the cars included long runs, which were
evaluated while all three cars ran on the track together. "The lucky few
who got to watch the test session, primarily track employees cleaning up
after the IRL event, were treated to an extraordinary display of driving
ability. Together, the three drivers provided the optimum race simulation
for our engineers to develop the best possible Eagle recommendation for
this track," added Holmer.
