AUTO RACING ANALYSIS RACEFACTS BULLETIN NOVEMBER 15, 1998 Jeff Burton (Track Gear Roush Ford Taurus) won Sunday's Homestead 1998 NASCAR Busch Grand National championship finale! Jeff's win made him the most successful Ford Taurus driver (in terms of race wins) in the Taurus' 1998 BGN debut year with three victories as his Homestead victory joined wins at Richmond and Michigan. The Taurus won only six BGN races in 1998; his Roush teammate Mark Martin won twice and Ed Berrier won once for the Walsh team, becoming the first Taurus winner in the BGN series with his Hickory victory. Ford's high-water mark in the BGN series came in 1995 with fourteen victories by the Thunderbird; Thunderbirds won eight BGN races in 1996 and eight in 1997. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (AC-Delco Earnhardt Chevrolet Monte Carlo) won the 1998 NASCAR Busch Grand National title; he also led the series with seven victories. Earnhardt, Jr.'s 1998 championship victory came from the lowest BGN previous-season point ranking of any BGN champion, 47th in 1997 in only eight starts! The previous record was held by 1996 champion Randy Lajoie, who ranked 37th in 1995 BGN points as he split 1995 between BGN and Winston Cup, ranking 40th in Winston Cup after leaving the Bill Davis team. Tommy Ellis won the 1988 title after ranking 31st in 1987 and Steve Grissom won the 1993 title after ranking twelfth in 1992. All other BGN champions had ranked in the top nine in the previous season's point standings. Earnhardt's seven wins were part of a 23-win Chevrolet season, with Ford trailing with six victories and Pontiac two. The Earnhardt team led with seven wins, with Roush achieving five (three by the Burton effort, two by the Martin group). Among the Chevrolet teams, the single-entry Nemechek team won three times (two by Joe, one by Ron Fellows) as did the single-entry Reiser team with Matt Kenseth. BACE won three times with the Tim Fedewa effort taking two wins and Randy Lajoie one. Mike McLaughlin's portion of the Cicci-Welliver Team 34 effort won twice; Elliott Sadler won twice for Bechtel. Single wins were scored by the Jimmy Spencer, Shoemaker, and Taylor efforts as nine entrants comprising ten "teams" won for the Bowtie Brigade! Pontiac's wins were scored by the Joe Gibbs and Buckshot Jones teams. All told, the 31 BGN races were won by thirteen entrants comprising fifteen "teams." In the sixteen 1998 BGN races held on Winston Cup superspeedways, Earnhardt, Jr. led the way with three victories! Kenseth, Martin and Nemechek trailed with two wins each on the Cup superspeedways, with single wins on such tracks scored by Burton, Jones, Bobby Labonte, McLaughlin, Sadler, Spencer, and Dick Trickle. Four 1998 BGN races were held on Winston Cup short tracks (Bristol and Richmond). Burton, Earnhardt, Jr., Kevin Lepage, and Sadler won these races. Five 1998 BGN races were contested on non-Winston Cup short tracks; the wins were taken by Berrier, Earnhardt, Jr., Fedewa, Lajoie, and McLaughlin. Five 1998 BGN races were held on non-Winston Cup superspeedways; Earnhardt, Jr. led this category with two wins; single victories were taken by Burton, Fedewa, and Kenseth. Ron Fellows won the Watkins Glen road course race in Joe Nemechek's Chevrolet. Earnhardt, Jr. won in every category except the road course event! Earnhardt, Jr. is not only NASCAR's first third-generation champion and the Earnhardt family NASCAR's first family with three generations of champions, he is also only the second son of a Winston Cup champion to win the BGN title, joining Larry Pearson (1986 and 1987), son of David Pearson!
