FLORENCE, SC: Cale Yarborough Motorsports will not return to competition for the 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup season. Yarborough, a car owner for ten years, cannot find a sponsor for his racing team. The pullout is effective immediately.

Yarborough's existing contract for the number 98 Thorn Apple Valley car ended early. Thorn Apple Valley, a luncheon meat manufacturer, was supposed to be on board with a three year contract with Yarborough. Corporate losses throughout the year have forced the sponsor out of racing.

"They did this even though they did have a contract they should have honored," said a displeased Yarborough. "It's a tough, tough business."

He continued, "I just don't have a sponsor and can't operate. This has been a 10-year project for me to put this team together to make it work. To do what I had to do today was the biggest disappointment in my whole career, to tell those guys (in the shop) we were going to shut down."
