RALLY: Tommi Makinen (Mitsubishi) has Crashed out of the Network Q Rally

24 November 1998

His chances for his third successive World Rally Drivers Championship have diminished considerably but the rally is not yet over. Makinen started the rally 2 points ahead of Sainz and this means that Sainz must now finish 4th or better to take the title. In such a competitive field, this is no easy task and Sainz can not afford slow down. With over 300 competitive km, anything can still happen...

Headlines:

- Leg 1 of the rally is really for spectators. All stages are relatively short and there is little to win but everything to lose.

- It all went wrong for Makinen when on SS 5, he slid on oil, hit a concrete block and lost a rear tyre which folded under the car. He completed SS5 & 6 on three wheels, but was stopped by police on the liason

- Colin McRae had opened up a 23 second lead before breaking a wheel on SS 7

- Alister McRae is also driving superbly in the Subaru

- Burns experienced a centre differential problem (SS1&2) which appears to have been traced to a software problem and has now been fixed.

- Marcus Gronholm retired after his car caught fire

- disappointment for Mark Higgins in the Nissan Almera GTi on his home as he retired with lack of oil pressure

- Pavel Sibera in the Skoda Octavia Kitcar retired due to an accident (SS 5)
