IRL: Newman Takes His Turn in Pennzoil Panther G Force

4 December 1998

Fort Worth, Texas -- Ryan Newman, United States Auto Club Silver Crown stand out, was just beginning his fourth and final phase of his Pep Boys IRL rookie test when the rain came. The thirty-five minute downpour was enough to put an end to the first day of the rookie tests sponsored by Pennzoil.

Newman had completed 35 laps (52.5 miles) and was in need of just 10 more between 205 and 210 mph to be officially licensed to race in the Pep Boys IRL.

Newman reached the 200 mph barrier in only his 11th lap (16.5 miles) when he was clocked at 202.54 mph. Newman's top speed of the day was 213.36 mph.

Because of today's bad weather and the forcast for rain throughout Friday morning, Friday's agenda will begin with Pennzoil World of Outlaws driver Jac Haudenschild, followed by sports car competitor David Donohue. If time permits, Newman will be back in the car to complete his final phase.
