NASCAR WCUP: Dan Glauz Named Crew Chief For Bahari Racing Team

Mooresville, N.C. - Bahari Racing has hired Dan Glauz, who was instrumental in helping Mike Skinner win NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year honors in 1997, as its new crew chief.Glauz, 39, replaces Doug Hewitt, who left at the end of the 1998 season to become Kyle Petty's crew chief. Glauz will work with driver Derrike Cope, who won his first NASCAR Winston Cup Series Bud Pole Award in October at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Glauz worked as chassis specialist for Tim Steele when he won the first of his three ARCA championships in 1993. After serving in the same capacity for Ward Burton with car owner A.G. Dillard through 1995, Glauz worked with Rick Mast. He was assistant crew chief and chassis specialist for Skinner at Richard Childress Racing. With Glauz and crew chief Kevin Hamlin, Skinner became the first rookie to ever sweep both poles at Daytona International Speedway in 1997.
Glauz was a crew chief for rookie Mark Krogh in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division at the beginning of the 1998 season. He closed out the season as Bobby Hillin's crew chief.
"I just felt like there was a certain type of individual we needed as far as a crew chief," Bahari Racing owner Chuck Rider said. "Dan has worked hard all of his life. He's been a very steady learner under some very quality people. He knows the basics of every car. He began with chassis building, so he understands setups in cars and understands aero. He is quiet in his demeanor, but he is also very active in making things happen. The more meetings I had with Dan, even though he was quiet in his approach, it was interesting to hear about his knowledge in so many aspects of the sport."
Glauz hopes to make a name for himself by helping Cope and Bahari Racing back to prominence.
"My name may not be familiar with race fans," Glauz said, "but I really feel like with my chassis ability and the people we have here at Bahari Racing, we should do well. The equipment Chuck has for us is second to none. Chuck wanted somebody new, young and hungry. He's giving me a chance to prove myself."
