ENTRIES ROLLING IN: A total of 51 cars have met the first deadline, officially entering the 1999 Rolex 24 At Daytona. With eight cars registered for the test only and 11 additional number reservations, the total of probable entries starts at 71 - a month and a half away from the race. Last year at this point, less than 50 entries had been received, but 74 cars started the race.

Of the 71 cars, 23 are Can-Am entries - five more than started in 1998. GT2 has already grown by 50 percent, with 15 entries to last year's 10. GT3 is also up by two - to 29. GTT entries have been slow thus far, with only four cars in the tube-frame category.

"Entry numbers are right where we had hoped they would be," said Alan Wilson, USRRC General Manager. "The best aspect of the entry list thus far is the quality of the entries. Looking down the list, there's anywhere between 10 and 15 teams that could win overall. Each class is full of top contenders."

Yet to enter is the defending team champion Doran Racing, but it is possible that three of the four victorious drivers from 1998Didier Theys, Mauro Baldi and Arie Luyendykwill team with Freddy Lienhard in a Ferrari. Gianpiero Moretti, owner and final team driver of last year's winning Ferrari, retired from Daytona in Victory Circle the past February.
