NASCAR WCUP: Square D Racing, The New Deal

22 December 1998

HARRISBURG, N.C., - Our 32nd president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, ascended into office during America's most fractured setting since the Civil War - the Great Depression.

To bring the United States out of its economic and social abyss of the 1930s, Roosevelt successfully implemented The New Deal, which focused on improving six areas of domestic policy: (1) agriculture (2) the environment (3) housing (4) welfare (5) the economy (6) industry.

In 1999, NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Kenny Wallace will have his version of The New Deal. Just as Roosevelt strove to better America's fortunes with his New Deal policies, Wallace expects his own reversal of fortune in 1999 behind the wheel of the No. 55 Square D Chevrolet as part of Andy Petree Racing.

As president, Roosevelt dealt with a starved economy, unemployment and stagnated industry. As a Winston Cup driver, Wallace has dealt with DNFs, inconsistent team chemistry and stagnated championship point tallies.

For the pilot of the Square D Chevy, Wallace's New Deal policy will follow Roosevelt's methodology for getting back on track by focusing on six key areas: (1) Going from a single car team with FILMAR Racing to the multi-car operation of Andy Petree Racing. (2) Having a teammate in longtime friend and fellow racer Ken Schrader. (3) Building the essential chemistry needed to succeed with first-year crew chief Jimmy Elledge. (4) Testing prior to the start of the 1999 Winston Cup season. (5) Switching from a Ford to a Chevrolet. (6) Preparing physically and mentally for the 1999 season.

While the time between Thanksgiving and Daytona's Speedweeks may be called the off-season, it is anything but. For the Square D squad, preparations are underway now to implement The New Deal.

In the following weeks leading up to Daytona, Square D Racing will bring you a series of releases previewing the work that is currently going into Wallace's New Deal. Each release will touch upon an aspect of The New Deal designed to make Kenny Wallace and Andy Petree Racing a success in 1999. Stay tuned.
