KARTING: Randy Smith Takes Aim with "The Slingshot"

28 December 1998

Easton, Pa., - Randy Smith, former Modified driver and co-owner of S&S Speedway in Effort, PA., an indoor kart racing facility, is now a dealer for the Slingshot. The Slingshot is a new venture into the world of motorsports. With a 58" wheelbase, this Spec racer features a V-twin powerplant and a four coil suspension. It's actually a scaled down version of a dirt Modified but is 110'' inches long and 4 feet wide. The frame of a Slingshot is powder-coated and enables aspiring racers, with big dreams and tiny check books, to have their choice of seven different colors of aluminum bodies to choose from. These cars can be purchased in body colors of red, black, blue, yellow, orange, white or green. Body styles must be identical because this is "spec" series racing. The ignition is a Magnito and the 8" tires cost only an approximate $25.00 each! Engines are sealed on the Slingshot and must be returned to the manufacturer for replacement. The Slingshot is manufactured by Modified driver, Richie Tobias. It is designed to run on 1/8 and 1/4 mile speedways. The car can also be easily converted to run on dirt or asphalt.

Randy Smith has already tested the Slingshot on the 1/4 mile asphalt at the Mahoning Valley Speedway in Lehighton, PA. And, the new Slingshot series will run on a regular basis at Mahoning in 1999, on the dirt at the Borger Speedway in Saylorsburg, Pa. and at several other tracks in the Pennsylvania and New York area that will be participating in the Slingshot Power series. The Slingshot will also be making its debut next season at Talladega, Alabama and Indianapolis, Indiana. Randy Smith made some positive comments about the Slingshot. He said, "The car got around Mahoning pretty quick and handled real good. The Slingshot fills a void in racing for the guy who wants to race but doesn't want to spend a small fortune. You can buy a Slingshot for about the price of a four wheeler!" Smith will have the Slingshot on display at the Fort Washington Expo Center during Pennzoil Motorsports in January of 1999 and will also have the S&S Speedway cars at Pennzoil Motorsports. Some members of the media will get an even closer look at the Slingshot when S&S Speedway hosts their second annual "Media Madness Night" on Tuesday, January 19. Anyone interested in more information on the Slingshot can call Randy Smith or visit S&S Speedway in Effort, PA. to see a Slingshot.
