Changes to the South American Touring Car Championship
14 January 1999
The South American Touring Car Championship has also its silly season and its changes, and the changes have already begun in great style . . . Reigning champion Oscar Larrauri left the BMW Proas Team to join Alfa Romeo, whilst Brazilian Cacá Bueno gets a new teammate--Emiliano Spataro-- who will replace former CART driver Juan Manuel Fangio II at the Peugeot Team. The sanctioning body S-ATCC, publicized an entry list showing 30 cars, including two Alfa Romeo 156 to be used by Larrauri and argentinian Osvaldo Cocho López. Rumours say that the season will start with a non-championship race at Punta del Leste, in February, a final date to be announced shortly depending of mandatory FIA safety measures being implemented at the "El Jagual" race track in Uruguay.
