1999 DAYTONA 500/WINSTON CUP REVIEW

Jeff Gordon’s (DuPont Hendrick Chevrolet Monte Carlo) victory in
the 1999 Daytona 500 marked his second win in the classic in three years
(joining his 1997 win) and Chevrolet’s third consecutive win in the
event, 1997-98-99! Since 1989, Chevrolet has won nine Daytona 500s,
Ford two, each with Yates Racing (Davey Allison in 1992, Dale Jarrett in
1996)! The three consecutive wins by Chevrolet in the Daytona 500 ties
the marque consecutive win record for the event; Chevrolet first won
three straight Daytona 500s in 1989-1990-1991 and again in the
1993-1994-1995 classics!
The victory was Gordon’s second consecutive in a Daytona
point-paying Winston Cup event, joining his 1998 Pepsi 400 win! Gordon
also won the 1995 Pepsi 400 and thus has four Daytona Winston Cup “point
race” wins.

Runnerup Dale Earnhardt won his tenth consecutive 125-mile
qualifier on Thursday, completing a sweep of his 125-mile qualifiers for
the entire decade, 1990-99! Dale also won 125s in 1983 and 1986. All
but one of the twelve victories (1983 in a Ford) came in Chevrolets!

Ford’s major bright spot during Daytona Winston Cup action was
Mark Martin’s (Valvoline Roush Ford Taurus) victory in the Bud Shootout!
Martin became the fourth defending champion of “The Winston” to
then win the Bud Shootout! Bill Elliott (1986 Winston-1987 Shootout)
was the first, followed by Dale Earnhardt (1987 Winston-1988 Shootout;
1990 Winston-1991 Shootout)! If Martin wins the 1999 Winston, he will
be the first driver to win three consecutive events in the two
highest-profile “nonpoint” Winston Cup special events!
Martin became the eighth driver to achieve at least one win in the
Winston and in the Bud Shootout. Dale Earnhardt leads with nine wins
(six Shootouts, three Winstons), followed by Jeff Gordon (two Winstons,
two Shootouts). Martin joins Geoffrey Bodine, Bill Elliott, Terry
Labonte, Rusty Wallace, and Darrell Waltrip with one victory in each
event!

AUTO RACING ANALYSIS MODEL REVIEW

Just in time for the 1-2 finish by Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt
in the 1999 Daytona 500, Revell-Monogram has introduced exciting new
model kits depicting the #24 and #3 Chevrolet Monte Carlos!
The model kits are 1:24 scale SnapTite ProFinish kits, a new line
featuring pre-decorated (painted and tampo printed) bodies with rolling
wheels.
These models feature outstandingly accurate and vibrant color
schemes and car numbers, providing the perfect starting point for a
successful kit assembly! The most impressive advancement by ARA’s
estimation has been achieved with the Peel N’Stick decals; these
easy-to-handle decals provide the seamless detailing of traditional
waterslide decals without the hassle! No problems were encountered in
applying the decals; they were also properly configured and sized to
match the prototype in every case!
The level of additional detail provided by these models is
impressive; they are superspeedway models and feature engraved roof and
cowl flaps, vented front air dam, integral deck spoiler, and rocker
panel skirt extensions. The interior, including vent hoses, is
appropriately modeled, as is the up-to-date roll cage design. The
realistic Goodyear Eagles are mounted on appropriately colored racing
(not “show car”) rims.
The assembly process benefits from the free-wheeling metal axle
design and the utilization of six screws in the assembly process,
resulting in a rigidly constructed and properly aligned model!
Color photography of these fine models as assembled by ARA will
appear in the near future on the ARA website.
A note for readers: children 12 and under may enter a “Lead the
Field” NASCAR Design Contest; details may be found on the
Revell-Monogram website at www.revell-monogram.com!
