Silverstone,British GP Update: Friday p.m.

by Andrew Frankl,

It's hard to believe but such is the interest in Formula One in Britain that 33 thousand spectators turned up and spent real money to watch unofficial practice.

Fans of the French-Canadian Jacques Villeneuve were not disappointed as the 24 yearold pulled out all the stops and with just a few minutes to go in the 1 hour session managed to get the fastest time of the day. His 1:27.541 compares very favourably with Hill's time of 1:28.241.

World champion Michael Schumacher is languishing in 5th place. There were no major dramas or spins, all in all it was a pretty dull afternoon.

Afterwards Jacques said he was very happy and had every intention of beating Hill on his home ground!

Tomorrow is the timed qualifying session which counts but even that is not that important as elsewhere because it isn't like Monaco, where it is impossible to pass. As this is Britain there is a great deal of betting on at the trackside, most of the money going on a Hill-Villeneuve double, but only time will tell.. Me? I put $10 on Berger at 20:1.
