April Gas Prices Rise Sharply, Says CSAA

SAN FRANCISCO, April 21 -- Retail gas prices in northern
California, Nevada and Utah are up dramatically, the California State
Automobile Association (CSAA) reported Monday.
Self-serve unleaded averages $1.41 a gallon in northern California, up
four cents compared to CSAA's March 17, 1997, Fuel Gauge Survey.
The average for self-serve unleaded has risen twelve cents in San
Francisco to $1.52. In Santa Cruz and Fresno, the average rose twelve cents
to $1.48 and $1.41. Monterey's average is up eleven cents to $1.48.
Concord's average climbed ten cents to $1.45 a gallon. San Jose and San
Mateo's averages have risen nine cents to $1.48 and $1.50. Oakland and
Sacramento's averages climbed eight cents to $1.46 and $1.44. (See
accompanying chart for detailed price changes.)
The regional averages for self-serve unleaded in northern California,
Nevada and Utah are up 4 to 12 cents compared to last month.
The national average for self-serve unleaded gasoline is $1.25, down four
cents from last month, and one cent more than a year ago.
"Gasoline production still has not reached full capacity in California.
As a result, gasoline inventories are considerably lower than they were this
time last year. In addition, the strong spring consumer demand is affecting
prices," said CSAA spokesman Ron Kennedy.
In Nevada, the average for self-serve regular unleaded has risen six cents
to $1.43. The Las Vegas average rose three cents to $1.39. Reno's average
climbed eight cents to $1.47.
Utah's average for self-serve regular unleaded has risen six cents to
$1.29 a gallon. Provo's average rose eight cents to $1.30. In Salt Lake
City, the average climbed three cents to $1.28.
Motorists may see pump prices at individual retailers which vary from the
survey averages.
CSAA provides an array of automotive, travel, financial and insurance
services to 3.7 million members in California, Nevada and Utah.
