American Automobile Manufacturers Association President and CEO Issues Statement on Senate VoteWASHINGTON, July 25 -- The following statement was issued by Andrew H. Card, Jr., President and CEO of the American Automobile Manufacturers Association, in response to today's 95-0 vote in the Senate on S. Res. 98. The resolution states the Senate's opposition to any global climate treaty which does not include new commitments to limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions by developing nations, which would harm the U.S. economy, and which is not accompanied by a detailed analysis of economic impacts. "Today's unanimous Senate vote sends a strong, clear signal that the administration should not commit the United States to any global climate treaty which does not include firm, realistic, verifiable new emissions reduction commitments by developing countries within the same compliance period. Nor should the administration commit the United States to any treaty that sacrifices American jobs and American economic vitality to policies based on questionable science. "This unprecedented action by the Senate should serve as a wake-up call to the administration to adopt a more open and realistic approach to global climate negotiations."
