Minivan and Truck Sales Power Chrysler to Match Sales Rate Record for August

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 3 -- Chrysler Corporation
sold more minivans and trucks last month than in any previous
August, pushing its overall daily sales rate to match the record of August
1996.
    Sales were 180,131 vehicles in 26 sales days, compared with the August
1996 total of 186,306 in 27 sales days.
    "We continue to see solid consumer demand for our core products," said
James P. Holden, Executive Vice President - Sales and Marketing.  "August
included records for Dodge Caravan, Ram Pickup and Dakota, and for Chrysler
Town & Country and Sebring Coupe.
    "Dodge Division set a record and the Jeep(R) brand had its second best
August," Holden said.  "Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee matched its daily sales rate of
a year ago.
    "We've set a solid foundation for the launch of our 1998 models."
    Truck sales in August totaled 131,538, an increase of 7 percent from last
year's 127,870, the previous record.  Passenger car sales were 48,593, down
14 percent from 58,436 in August 1996.
    Minivan sales were a record 45,508, up 10 percent from a year ago.  Dodge
Ram Pickup surpassed the previous August record -- last year's 26,337 -- with
sales of 28,280, an increase of 12 percent.
    Chrysler U.S. sales for the year to date through August were 1,580,938,
compared with 1,702,337 in the comparable period a year ago.  Truck sales were
1,049,226, compared with 1,098,493 in 1996.  Car sales totaled 531,712 vs.
603,844 a year ago.
