1999 Cougar Production Confirmed at Flat RockFLAT ROCK, Mich., Sept. 4 -- Ford Motor Company today confirmed that the AutoAlliance International, Incorporated (AAI) facility in Flat Rock, Michigan will be the sole production site for the all- new 1999 Mercury Cougar. Ford Vice Chairman Wayne Booker made the announcement today during employee recognition ceremonies marking AAI's tenth anniversary. AAI is a 50/50 partnership between Ford and Mazda Corporation. "It's fitting on this landmark date for Flat Rock that we announce Mercury Cougar will be built here," Booker said. "It's especially important news for the plant and its employees because it means two completely separate and distinct cars -_ the new Cougar and Mazda's new 626 -_ will be built here." Originally launched in the 1967 model year, Cougar has a long history in North American motoring. The all-new front-wheel-drive Cougar is a modern interpretation of that theme, building on the original's sporty image. "This new breed of cat will provide our customers with the rich heritage and spirit of the original Cougar in a stylish, contemporary package that delivers the fun, flair, and flexibility of the new Mercury," said Jim O'Connor, the Ford vice president in charge of Mercury. The 1999 Cougar will be a two-door specialty sports coupe based on the highly acclaimed Mondeo/Contour/Mystique platform. Its body will feature design cues from Ford's unique and innovative New Edge approach to automotive design. SOURCE Lincoln-Mercury Division
