UAW President Stephen P. Yokich Calls Death of George Crockett 'Passing of a Great Champion of Civil Rights'DETROIT, Sept. 12 -- UAW President Stephen P. Yokich expressed the sorrow of the union at the death of retired Congressman George Crockett, Jr. saying, "The UAW shares the regret felt by so many in Michigan and throughout the nation at the passing of a great champion of civil rights and civil liberties -- George Crockett, Jr." "In his long and remarkable career as an attorney, a Recorder's Court judge, and a Congressman, George Crockett was steadfast in his concern for the rights of ordinary people in the United States and abroad, and for justice and freedom for those who were oppressed," Yokich continued. Crockett served as the founder and director of UAW Fair Employment Practices Department in the 1940s. "George Crockett's determination to ensure that the law was applied fairly and with compassion, without fear or favor, remains an inspiration to carry forward the struggle for social justice and human rights," Yokich stated. "The union offers our deepest sympathy to his family at this time of great loss," Yokich concluded. SOURCE UAW
