UAW President Stephen P. Yokich Calls Death of George Crockett 'Passing of a Great Champion of Civil Rights'

DETROIT, Sept. 12 -- UAW President Stephen P. Yokich
expressed the sorrow of the union at the death of retired Congressman George
Crockett, Jr. saying, "The UAW shares the regret felt by so many in Michigan
and throughout the nation at the passing of a great champion of civil rights
and civil liberties -- George Crockett, Jr."
"In his long and remarkable career as an attorney, a Recorder's Court
judge, and a Congressman, George Crockett was steadfast in his concern for the
rights of ordinary people in the United States and abroad, and for justice and
freedom for those who were oppressed," Yokich continued. Crockett served as
the founder and director of UAW Fair Employment Practices Department in the
1940s.
"George Crockett's determination to ensure that the law was applied fairly
and with compassion, without fear or favor, remains an inspiration to carry
forward the struggle for social justice and human rights," Yokich stated.
"The union offers our deepest sympathy to his family at this time of great
loss," Yokich concluded.
