Volkswagen Reports September Sales

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich. Oct. 2 -- With sales of 11,203,
Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported its second best September since 1990.
This figure represents a small decline from last September's very strong mark
of 12,687 which was the best since 1988.
    For the year, Volkswagen sales are 105,930 compared to last year's figure
of 106,948.
    "Our September sales in part represent the success of our build-out for
1997 models, which has left us with our lowest inventory of the year," said
Clive Warrilow, President and CEO, Volkswagen of America, Inc.  "This means
our dealers are fully prepared and are now receiving all of Volkswagen's 1998
models, including the highly acclaimed new Passat sedan which is now on sale."
