Volkswagen Reports Sales - Second Best October in Seven Years

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Nov. 4 -- With sales of 9,976,
Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported its second best October sales results
since 1990.  This figure represents a slight 0.5 percent decline from last
October's strong figure of 10,030, which was the best since 1990.
    Year-to-date, Volkswagen has sold 115,906 new cars, versus the same
period in 1996 when sales were 116,978.
    Volkswagen's October sales were led by strong Jetta sales at 6,631 versus
last year's mark of 6,267, an increase of nearly 6 percent.
    Also notable among Volkswagen's October results were brisk sales of the
Cabrio model at 646 versus last year's figure of 356, an 81.5 percent
increase.
