USWA Announces Tentative Agreement With Dunlop Tire

10 November 1997

Termination Date April 23, 2000, Follows USWA Tire and Rubber Industry Pattern; USWA Reaches Tentative Agreement With Dunlop Tire

BUFFALO, N.Y., Nov. 10 -- The new agreement reached Friday
between United Steelworkers Local 135 and Dunlop Tire & Rubber Corp. follows
the 1997 USWA tire and rubber industry pattern.
"We reached our number one objective in this agreement in following the
USWA pattern termination date," said Bernard Kleiman, USWA special counsel.
In keeping with the tire and rubber industry pattern, the new 29-month
agreement will expire April 23, 2000.
Achieving common contract expiration dates has been a major Steelworkers
bargaining goal in the tire and rubber industry. Such was also achieved
earlier this year in the USWA Local 915 agreement with Dunlop in Huntsville,
Ala. Other major tire contracts such as Bridgestone/Firestone have the same
termination or a reopener on this date.
While additional details of the agreement won't be released until a
ratification vote Saturday, the Buffalo agreement follows the industry pattern
in other respects and also achieves objectives unique to this location.
Dunlop is owned by Sumitomo Rubber of Japan.
