Jaguar Reports November Sales
4 December 1997
Sales of V8-Powered Sedans Lead Jaguar to Nine-Year PeakMAHWAH, N.J., Dec. 3 -- Demand for the new V8-powered XJ Series sedans led Jaguar Cars to its best November sales in the United States in nine years. Sedan sales climbed 31.5 percent over November 1996 to 1,398, the highest November for Jaguar since the record set in November 1988. Overall sales of Jaguars, at 1,859 for the month, likewise hit their highest point since November 1988. Jaguar sales for the first 11 months of the year rose 8.2 percent over 1996. Sales of its sports cars, the XK8 Coupe and Convertible, were up 50.8% for the year. "The enthusiasm we are seeing among customers in the showroom is palpable," said Michael H. Dale, president of Jaguar Cars North America. "They are telling our dealers that our new V8-powered XJ sedans are precisely on target: virtually all new mechanical components and a more elegant interior along with the sensuous exterior styling they expect from Jaguar. The fact that we maintained 1997 pricing for 1998, despite significant improvements, is also contributing to our showroom success." Each of Jaguar's four sedan models registered gains for the month, with the standard-wheelbase XJ Sedan showing a year-on-year increase of 58.7 percent. Like all Jaguar sedans this year, the XJ8 was introduced with the award-winning AJ-V8 engine, side air bags, a redesigned interior and one of Jaguar's two traction-control systems. Sedan prices range from $54,750 for the XJ8 to $67,400 for the XJR, whose zero-to-sixty-mile-per-hour time of 5.4 seconds makes it the fastest production sedan in the country. The XJR registered a 47.0 percent gain over November 1996. November was the second month of sales for the V8-powered XJ Series sedans. It was also the second-highest November on record for total Jaguar sales, and sales were 7.4 percent higher than one year earlier.
