1998 Dodge Intrepid Named One of Car and Driver's 'Ten Best'

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Dec. 9 -- Today Car and Driver magazine
announced the all-new 1998 Dodge Intrepid as one of its "Ten Best Cars" for
1998. Other winners included nominations from BMW, Porsche, Honda and Lexus.
The competition, which is open to cars, pickup trucks, minivans and sport
utility vehicles, is designed to identify a wide range of vehicles that have
the greatest appeal to the public. To be a contender, a vehicle must first go
on sale by no later than January 1998 and have a base price no higher than
$55,000.
In the magazine's review of Intrepid, Car and Driver's Editor-in-Chief
Csaba Csere wrote, "When Intrepid ESX materialized as a concept car at the
1996 Detroit auto show, we certainly didn't expect that anything remotely
resembling such a radical design would make it into production. Coupled with
sharp steering and responsive handling, the Intrepid is the large family sedan
of choice for the enthusiast driver."
"Out of 56 nominees, we are thrilled that Car and Driver has selected the
Dodge Intrepid as one of its Ten Best," said Ray Fisher, General Manager of
the Dodge Division. "With its sleek, muscular design, our newly-designed 1998
Dodge Intrepid is the perfect vehicle for consumers seeking an exhilarating
driving experience in a sedan that comfortably seats five or six. Like all
Dodge vehicles, Intrepid is bold, powerful and capable."
Intrepid's re-design for 1998 extends far beyond its bold appearance,
starting with two all-new, all-aluminum engines that use regular-grade fuel
and are up to 25 percent more powerful and 10 percent more fuel efficient than
the engines they replace. The Intrepid is powered by an all-aluminum
2.7-liter, 24-valve, V-6 engine. Rated at 200 horsepower, it has the highest
per-liter rating in its class. The Intrepid ES is powered by an all-aluminum
3.2-liter V-6 that delivers 225 horsepower. All Intrepid ES sedans are
equipped with the AutoStick(R) performance feature which allows drivers to
shift gears without using a clutch.
The suggested retail price for a 1998 Dodge Intrepid is $20,235 including
destination. The suggested retail price for Intrepid ES is $23,015. Intrepid
is manufactured at Chrysler Corporation's Bramalea Assembly Plant in Ontario,
Canada.
