Big Three Panel to Discuss Intelligent TransportationWASHINGTON, Jan. 22 -- A panel of top research executives from the big three auto makers will convene at Detroit's Cobo Hall on Tuesday, May 5, joining more than 4,000 professionals in advanced transportation technologies attending the Eighth Annual Meeting of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America). The ITS America annual meetings bring together industry executives, government officials, and research scientists to focus on the use of the latest communications, computer, and electronic technologies in surface transportation. The "Big Three Blue Ribbon Panel" will provide the auto manufacturer's perspective on current and future ITS trends. Panelists are: from Chrysler, Bernard I. Robertson, Vice President, Engineering Technology & General Manager, Jeep/Truck Operations; from Ford, William J. Powers, Vice President, Research, and from General Motors, Kenneth R. Baker, Vice President, Global Research & Development Operations. "ITS products such as in-vehicle electronic navigation systems, Mayday emergency notification systems, and other driving enhancement technologies are being made available to buyers of more automobiles each year," said Dr. James Costantino, president of ITS America. "As these advanced technologies proliferate throughout the vehicle fleet, it is crucial that the motor vehicle industry keep the rest of the ITS community informed about what it sees as the opportunities and challenges ahead. This panel will do just that," he said. The ITS America Annual Meeting runs from May 4 through May 7 in Cobo Hall, where more than 120 technical exhibits will demonstrate ITS products and services currently in use and available for deployment. More than 70 technical sessions will offer the latest in research results, technical innovations, and market developments. On Monday, May 4, the Economic Club of Detroit will sponsor a luncheon at which U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater will be featured speaker. Another highlight will be the U.S. Department of Transportation Modal Administrators Panel on Wednesday, May 6, moderated by Mortimer Downey, Deputy U.S. Secretary of Transportation and a member of the ITS America Board of Directors. Panelists will be Gordon Linton, Federal Transit Administrator; Ricardo Martinez, National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator; Jolene Molitoris, Federal Railroad Administrator, and Kenneth Wykle, Federal Highway Administrator.
