Toyota Corolla Compact Sedan and Sienna Minivan Win 1998 Motorweek `Drivers' Choice' Awards

TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 4 -- The all-new 1998 Toyota Corolla
compact sedan and all-new Sienna minivan grabbed top honors in their segments
in the 16th annual MotorWeek "Drivers' Choice" Awards. The announcement marks
the ninth time in the awards' 16-year history that a Toyota vehicle was
honored as "best in class."
MotorWeek is a televised weekly automotive magazine that has provided
consumers with in-depth car reviews and timely, practical news on the
automotive industry since 1980.
The Toyota Corolla received "Best Small Car" honors and the Sienna was
awarded "Best Minivan." Winners were chosen by MotorWeek host John Davis and
the entire MotorWeek staff. Selections were based on practicality,
performance, technology and value for the dollar.
"It is especially satisfying for Corolla and Sienna to be honored, because
they are both built exclusively in North America," said Dave Illingworth,
Toyota senior vice president and general manager. The awards deliver an
important message; when Toyota designed these two new vehicles they did it
right."
Corolla is built at both New United Motor Manufacturing (NUMMI), in
Fremont, Calif., and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC), in
Cambridge, Ontario.
    Toyota's best-selling compact is all-new and completely re-designed for
1998. It is powered by an all-new 1.8-liter in-line four-cylinder engine that
not only produces 15 more horsepower than its predecessor but also improves
fuel economy by approximately 10 percent. Corolla also sets the standard in
its class for crash-worthiness and occupant safety.
The all-new Sienna minivan is built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing,
Kentucky (TMMK) in Georgetown, Ky. alongside Toyota Camry and Avalon.
The front-wheel drive Sienna rides on a stretched and modified Camry
platform with a wheelbase of 114.2-inches, compared to the Camry's 105.2.
Sienna is powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 engine shared by Camry and Avalon. The
safest minivan ever produced by Toyota, Sienna meets or exceeds all current
and forseeable crash-test criteria worldwide.
The awards will be presented on MotorWeek's "Drivers' Choice" segment,
which airs on PBS stations nationwide, beginning February 21 and on sports
cable channel SpeedVision, beginning March 13.
