NASCAR's Dale Jarrett and Ford Credit Enter Race for the CureHAMPTON, Ga., March 7 -- Some races are simply more important than others. In 1998, NASCAR driver Dale Jarrett will be racing for more than Winston Cup championship points and prize money. He'll be racing for a cure for breast cancer. Every top-three finish and every number one starting position (pole) earned by Jarrett in NASCAR Winston Cup championship races during the 1998 campaign will generate a donation to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation from Ford Credit, co-sponsor of the #88 Quality Care Service/Ford Credit Taurus fielded by Robert Yates Racing. "I think it goes without saying that the women in my life, my wife, Kelley, my mom and my two girls, are very important to me," said Jarrett. "They've supported me while I've chased my dream of winning a NASCAR Winston Cup championship. With this program, my on-track success has an extra benefit that eventually may have a positive effect on my family. I'm happy to be a part of it." Mother of three children and a former school teacher, Kelly Jarrett supports her husband's partnership with Ford Credit on behalf of the Komen Foundation and will play an active role in their cause. "Breast cancer is a frightening reality for too many women, and the Komen Foundation provides hope," said Kelley Jarrett. "Dale and Ford Credit have a chance to help them along and, hopefully, I'll be able to help spread the message." Ford Credit will donate $10,000 to the Komen Foundation for every race that Jarrett wins, $7,500 for every runner-up finish and $5,000 for each third place finish this season. Jarrett will generate an additional $5,000 for the Komen Foundation for each pole he earns in competition. "We have a great opportunity here to raise awareness," said Bernard Silverstone, marketing director, Ford Credit. "We have access to a tremendous number of fans in the NASCAR arena. If we can help the Komen Foundation reach those fans through Dale and Kelly Jarrett, we'll have an impact." The Ford Credit program is part of a larger corporate initiative at Ford Motor Company involving the Susan G. Komen Foundation. A national sponsor of the Race for the Cure series, Ford Motor Company, its Ford and Lincoln Mercury divisions, their dealers and Ford Credit have generated donations of more than $1 million since their involvement began in 1995. In the past, more than 5,000 Ford employees have participated in Race for the Cure events. Ford also plans to continue its commitment to these programs through active involvement in all cities hosting race events in 1998. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is the nation's largest private funding source for research dedicated exclusively to breast cancer. Volunteers work through local chapters and Race for the Cure events to further the Foundation's mission of eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. Ford Credit, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, is the world's largest provider of automotive finance. It serves eight million customers in 35 countries. SOURCE Ford Credit
